Hypertension is a disease of the circulatory system in which the blood pressure is significantly elevated. The initial symptoms may be unnoticeable. Find out what not to underestimate, the causes of hypertension and how to deal with urinary incontinence in hypertension.

What is blood pressure?

Arterial pressure is the pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries by the flowing blood. The degree of this pressure varies between an upper limit (systolic pressure) and a lower limit (diastolic pressure), because the blood flowing out of the heart has to supply all the organs of the body with oxygen and then return to the heart for another dose of oxygen. The most optimal blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg. However, due to certain factors – stress, changing weather conditions or physical exertion – it can change throughout the day.

Hypertension – what is it?

Hypertension is said to occur when the blood pressure exceeds the acceptable norm at rest. However, one measurement is not enough. It is good to check yourself at least twice a day for a few days. If the average blood pressure is equal to or higher than 140/90 mmHg, hypertension may be suspected.

Arterial hypertension is regarded as a disease of civilisation. It is a huge threat to humans and very often the main cause of premature death. Untreated or inadequately treated, it can lead to heart attack, brain stroke or kidney failure.

Causes of hypertension

The causes of hypertension include mainly environmental and genetic factors. This disease most often affects people who lead an unsuitable lifestyle. In particular, an unhealthy diet, rich in fatty and salty foods, as well as physical inactivity, excess weight or high alcohol consumption.

Hypertension can also be caused by other conditions. These include, for example, Conn’s syndrome, kidney disease, Cushing’s syndrome or aortic stenosis.

Hypertension – symptoms

The classic symptoms of hypertension include the following:

  • recurrent headaches,
  • fatigue and sleep disturbance,
  • nervousness,
  • dizziness,
  • palpitations and shortness of breath.

At a later stage, the symptoms may become much more troublesome. Hypertension can then lead to kidney dysfunction, vision problems or significant swelling of the limbs.

Who is at risk of hypertension?

The incidence of hypertension increases with age. However, this does not mean that only elderly people are at risk of this type of disease. The disease is increasingly being diagnosed in young people and even children. Diabetics and people with lipid metabolism disorders are in the risk group.

Hypertension and urinary incontinence

Hypertension in its initial phase does not give clear signals that something is wrong in the organism. However, there are a number of quite unusual symptoms, which are not worth underestimating.

One of the symptoms of high blood pressure can be a problem with urinary incontinence (NTM). Frequent trips to the bathroom, especially at night, are the bane of high blood pressure sufferers. If you are struggling with this kind of ailment, it is necessary to see your doctor. Untreated incontinence can lead to many serious consequences. Over time, this problem will become impossible to cure, and will negatively affect self-esteem and physical and psychological comfort.

Urinary incontinence can also be a symptom of other conditions, such as developing diabetes, which we wrote about in a previous article.
